To translate the couplet from the musical Mrs. Santa Claus
Welcome to the world of Avenue A,into a language where the first letter of the alphabet has a less deviant name, have Come sta? and Oy vey! swap places. It takes little else.
Where you hear Come sta?, Bless my soul and Oy vey!
More on the linguistic situation in the musical:
- It's a multilingual world; in Avenue A (Manhattan, NYC) alone at least three languages are spoken (English, Italian and Yiddish), and it's likely that there are more.
- Anna Claus (who has spent all her life on the North Pole) speaks perfect English, but she's not familiar with the New York slang.
- Having picked up kiddo, however, upon her return she wastes no time trying it out on her husband, Nicholas (aka Santa) Claus, who hasn't heard it either. Meaning that English (though of a more mainstream variety) is the speech of their household on the North Pole.
