Excerpts from the dictionary of East Cree on the occasion of the 700th record in Bear's journal:

Northern dialect

čišāyākw — bear Ursus americanus
usāuskw — brown bear Ursus americanus
mihtāmin — large black bear Ursus americanus
nāpāmīčim — male bear
nūšāmīčim — female bear
čišāyākušiš — baby bear Ursus americanus
wītipimākiniš — bear cub in the den with mother during hibernation

čīpīkinh — arm and leg bones of a bear, human bones
čišāyākukišī — bear claw
čišāyākutičišī — bear intestine
učipisiwāsiuh — its (bear) muscle on the underside of the ribs, its (caribou, moose) muscle part of the lower leg
upisisčiwinī — its (bear, moose, caribou) intestine
wičiskiskw — lower large intestine of bear
upiskutī — stomach of bear, caribou, moose, beaver

wātiskw — bear den
čišāyākwāpui — broth from cooking bear
čišāyākuminh — kind of berry (lit. ‘bear berries’)

čišāyākunākun — the terrain looks like a good area for bears

pisčihtipišiu — it (young bear) hibernates alone for the first time

miskwākunāškiwāu — he finds signs of a bear near the area of its den, finds it under the snow with his foot
nituwičišāyākwāu — he hunts for bear
niwičišāyākwāu — he goes after a bear
pihkuničišāyākwāu — he skins a bear
wīyičišāyākwāu — he butchers bear
usičišāyākwāu — he boils bear meat
