I thought I’d seen bad hotels, and even worse hotels, but this one defies belief.

My sister-in-law booked, through a major online agency, a room at Bahami Residence for her sister (my wife) and me, and another for their mother and herself, in order to spend a 16-day holiday together. Ours was meant to be a 35m² room with a pool view, a kitchen, a fireplace and a folding sofa, and the booking stated the full price that the hotel was going to charge us. When I and my wife arrived, we were first asked to pay (in cash), which we naïvely did, although the price was somewhat higher (the explanation being that there was a local tax, but it wasn’t mentioned in the booking because the agency hadn’t made it possible for the hotel to declare it).

Then we were taken to another building (with a sign saying simply Bahami; some booking agencies actually list it as a different hotel), rather farther from the beach and with no properly paved street but just a stony path leading to it; and there we were shown to a room about a third of the stated size, with a distant view of another hotel’s pool, and no kitchen, sofa or fireplace. When we protested, the manager came (a blond woman, in all likelihood the same who’s been featured in several other people’s reviews here), and we learned the following: The room was 35m² all right, as not only the balcony and bathroom but also the thickness of the walls had to be counted in (this was already ridiculous); the booking didn’t say which hotel’s pool we were to have a view of; and regardless of what it said, the price we’d paid was for a room without a kitchen. Still, the manager suggested that we could be moved to a room with a microwave oven, and be lent a little electric stove, pans, crockery and cutlery, which we should regard as a very special favour because normally kitchens weren’t equipped with any such things. We thought we might agree to such a change.

In the meantime my in-laws arrived as well, found out we had taken their room (!), were offered an even worse deal, and a similar conversation began between them and the manager (Slava Dimitrova, we learned her name was), with my wife and me joining in. The manager getting progressively more abusive and impatient. What infuriated her most, it seemed, was my insistence that what was written in the booking was no more than our due. We were told, unceremoniously, that her only concern was money, that we’d already cost her too much time and courtesy whilst there were more expensive guests waiting, and it was in her mind to move us to even more basic accommodation if we went on rocking the boat. My mother-in-law looked quite ill, and at a certain point I actually feared for her health. Since they hadn’t paid anything, my sister-in-law decided they should go to another hotel, at a much higher cost and at quite some distance (there went our plans for a holiday together). My wife and I, having made our payment, had no choice but to stay, although we did wonder what would happen.

And now comes the best part. On the next day, when we came back from the beach, we found that all the kitchen equipment that had been brought to the room was gone! So much about lending it to us as an upgrade. We didn’t bother talking to the administration about this, as we obviously inhabited different realities.

And that was the last time any hotel staff entered our room. During our entire stay there our room wasn’t made up even once, our towels were never changed and the bin wasn’t emptied. (The wi-fi was down most of the time as well, but that probably affected the whole building, not just our room.)

So good to be away.

As you value your life or your reason …

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.
