I have a mean habit. Whenever I lay my hands on a book on various countries (cultures, languages, whatever), I look at what it says about Aliaburg, and if it's nonsense, I don't trust the lot.

Try this (Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life [Timothy L. Gall and Jeneen Hobby (eds.), Gale Cengage Learning 2009], vol. 5, p. 93):

The role of grandmothers is considered so special that there is a holiday dedicated to them—Grandmother’s Day on January 21.
Chap didn't realise that the word баба has more than one meaning, and Бабин ден is actually Midwives’ Day.

Ibidem (p. 92):

The hype goes: ‘Each two- to six-page entry is written and reviewed by subject experts who have in-depth knowledge of a particular world culture.’ A-yup.
